This treatise was a gift from Takuan Soho (Zen Master and Abbot of Tokaiji Temple in Edo) to his close friend, swordmaster Yagyu Munenori, not to Musashi. Yagyu Munenori was the official sword instructor to Tokugawa Ieyasu and his son Hidetada and political advisor to Tokugawa Iemitsu (grandson of Ieyasu and 3rd Shogun). It is the spiritual basis of the Heiho Kadensho. Takuan's ideas in this book and those reflected in Munenori's Heiho Kadensho represent arguably the first full-scale fusion of Zen with swordsmanship, and would forever change the nature and aims of Japanese swordsmanship.
