Tenugui - Mushin
The Mushin Tenugui is a traditional Japanese cotton Tenugui featuring the Kanji Mushin (無心), meaning “empty mind.” In Japanese martial arts and Budo, Mushin describes a state of mental clarity in which the mind remains free from distracting thoughts, allowing the practitioner to respond naturally and without hesitation.
This lightweight cotton tenugui is designed for practical use during martial arts training. In Kendo, Tenugui are traditionally worn around the head beneath the Men, helping to absorb sweat during intense training. They are also commonly used across other martial arts as a thin towel kept inside the Keikogi, providing quick and convenient access when needed.
Despite its thin construction, the cotton material is highly absorbent and lightweight. The Tenugui folds easily, making it ideal for storing inside a Keikogi or training bag without adding unnecessary bulk. It can also be used as a hand towel, training cloth, travel towel, or general-purpose cloth.
The Mushin (無心) design makes this more than simply a practical training accessory. The concept of an “empty mind” is deeply associated with Budo practice and the development of calm, instinctive, and focused movement. It is a fitting tenugui for practitioners who appreciate both the practical traditions and philosophical principles of Japanese martial arts.
Available in white with Mushin (無心) Kanji, this tenugui is an ideal choice for Kendo practitioners, other Budo students, and anyone interested in Japanese culture and traditional textiles.

- Wash before first use to remove any excess dye or finishing residue.
- Machine wash or hand wash in cool or lukewarm water.
- Wash dark or brightly coloured Tenugui separately during the first few washes, as some colour bleeding may occur.
- Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
- Avoid high-temperature washing, which may cause slight shrinkage or affect the print.
- Smooth out wrinkles by stretching the edges while the cloth is still wet.
- Air dry naturally whenever possible. Hang or lay flat to dry.
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, particularly with richly coloured or printed designs, as this may cause fading.
Important Note
Tenugui are traditionally unfinished along the cut edges. The edges may initially fray slightly after washing, this is normal. Simply trim any long loose threads if necessary; do not pull them.
Expect natural changes with use. Traditional tenugui can soften and develop a distinctive character over time
