Film recommendation: The Yakuza (1974)

Our film recommendation this time is "The Yakuza" (1974). Directed by Sydney Pollack its cast included Robert Mitchum and Ken Takakura. The story is about Harry Kilmer, a retired American detective and a veteran of the US military occupation in post-war Japan.  Kilmer is called upon by a friend to return to Japan in order to save his kidnapped daughter from the Yakuza. Kilmer dives into the underworld calling in a debt of honour owed by onetime yakuza member Ken, who hates him but still owes him a lifetime debt.

The film deals with several interesting aspects about Western values that conflict with Japanese values. Especially important is the concept of "GIRI" which, although it is not possible to translate it exactly, would be something like "sense of duty/loyalty".

Speaking about Giri, do you know that’s where the Giri Dojo Loyalty Scheme came from? Giri refers to the deep sense of loyalty built up between two parties, in this case between Nine Circles and our amazing customers. This is our way of paying back the loyalty and support of the Dojo we have built relationships with over the years and rewarding the long-term bulk purchase levels that Dojo customers sustain. It’s been running since 2005, rewarding our Dojo customers with discounts of up to 25% across our comprehensive range.
